How to Stop Giving Away the Downwind

Ask most club racers where they lose races and they'll tell you: the start, or a bad tack, or that one moment when the fleet went left and they went right. Rarely will anyone say "the downwind.” But spend an afternoon looking at your Atlas 2 data and the downwind leg has a way of quietly confessing things you'd rather not know.

People spend years treating the downwind as a break, the part of the race where you exhale, sort out the sail, and wait for the next upwind. Then they started actually looking at my VMG numbers on the run, and realised they were routinely giving away half the gains they’d worked for all the way up the beat.

Here's what changed:

1. Stop sailing by angle, start sailing by VMG

Upwind sailors learn early that pointing high isn't the same as going fast to the mark. Somehow, a lot of those same sailors forget this completely the moment they bear away.

On a downwind, the equivalent mistake is sailing straight for the leeward mark when the breeze angle or the waves are telling you to gybe or to sail on another angle. Your gut says "direct is fastest." Your VMG display often says something different.

The Atlas 2 shows you real-time VMG downwind. Start using it. In light air especially, sailing 15–20 degrees lower than a direct line and gybing once often gets you to the mark faster than pointing straight at it in a squirt of pressure that disappears halfway down.

2. Gybe on the puffs, not on a schedule

Most amateur sailors gybe when they feel like it, roughly at the layline, or when the mark looks about right, or when someone on the boat says "shouldn't we gybe?" None of these are terrible reasons. None of them are particularly good ones either.

The better trigger is pressure. When a puff fills in and your boat speed jumps, that's the moment to gybe, you carry the acceleration into the new jibe and immediately start building speed again on the other side. Gybing in the lulls means you lose momentum at the worst possible time and spend the next 30 seconds rebuilding.

Your speed trace on the Atlas 2 shows you exactly when the puffs hit. After a few sessions reviewing downwind data, you'll start to see your own gybing patterns clearly, and usually, the pattern is "gybing too late, in the wrong conditions."

3. Learn what your boat actually does in waves

Every boat has a wave-riding sweet spot, an angle and a rhythm where you can surf rather than punch. Most sailors know this exists in theory. Very few have actually mapped it against data.

Heel angle and speed together tell the story. When you're in the groove on a wave, your speed spikes and heel momentarily drops as the boat flattens out and accelerates. When you're fighting the waves, speed is erratic and heel is higher and more variable than it needs to be.

We spent a whole regatta sailing a wave angle that felt fast and found out afterward that I was actually slower on average than the boats who appeared to be sailing lower. The heel data showed I was fighting the chop instead of using it. It was a uncomfortable thing to learn and exactly the kind of thing the instrument exists to tell you.

4. The layline trap

Arriving at the leeward mark on a perfect layline feels efficient. Often it isn't. If you're on starboard jibe and twenty boats are stacking up on the same layline, you've traded a lane problem upwind for a traffic problem downwind.

5. Treat the downwind as a tactical leg, not a rest

This is the hardest thing and it has nothing to do with the instrument. The downwind is a full tactical leg, with pressure shifts, with positional play, with mark-rounding set-up that determines your entire next upwind. Sailors who treat it as a break hand places to sailors who don't.

The data just makes it easier to stay honest about which one you've been doing.
